They say that when a man gives up hope, the devil walks by his side. So begins this story. A soldier marched through a dark wood, but he did not march alone…

This vivid re-imaging of the 19th century Brothers Grimm classic tells the story of the Bearskinner, a young soldier who has lost everything - except his own life - to war. When the devil makes him a treacherous wager, he begins a seven-year journey to discover that a life without love, death or personal hygiene is not worth living. Wrapped in a bearskin, he is confronted by the Devil’s mistresses at every turn as they attempt to seduce him into breaking his fiery pact.

Set amidst a lounge bar forest of fake Christmas trees The Bearskinner is a dark comedy that incorporates live music, bad poetry and outrageous innuendo to tell a haunting tale of the relentless human struggle between good and evil, and the power of love.

At the 2009 Blue Room Theatre Awards The Bearskinner was nominated for Best Production and won the Audience Development Award for its sell-out audiences during its original 2009 world premiere season.

“From the team that brought you Oscar and The Oresteia last year comes this equally imaginative and quirky reimaging of the little known Grimm’s fairytale, Bearskin... It’s clear they are developing a performance style that is consistently entertaining and distinct, which is no mean feat” - Ali Taulbut, West Australian (September, 2009)
