February 2009 – Black Saturday. Victoria is ravaged by firestorms equalling the energy of 1500 atomic bombs. As fires rip through the tinder-dry country, residents prepare for the usual summer bushfire season, totally unaware of what lies in store.

By that day’s end, the fires have claimed 173 lives and whole towns are decimated. By week’s end, over a million acres of land are destroyed and arson is suspected.

Inspired by interviews with survivors, The Day the Sky Turned Black is a tribute to the everyday heroes who fought one of Australia’s worst natural disasters. Five characters will tell their poignant stories of survival and the journey to rebuild their lives.
